Mrs. Hazel Livingston Johnson passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law on December 23, 2020. Always precious to her family, the youthful and joyful Mims, as she was named by her grandson, had suffered a slow decline from Alzheimer’s since her early eighties.
Born on February 21, 1929, to Melvin Benjamin and Jewel Beatrice Livingston, Hazel was a child of the Great Depression and always carried with her the humble spirit of that generation. Married in 1949 to a World War II veteran, Hazel began the life she would always treasure—that of a loving wife, mother, and eventually grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eulus Odell Johnson, a grandson (Cooper Johnson Scarbrough), her brothers (Lavon, Linton, Elwin, and Kenneth), and her sister (Pauline). She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law (Kathy and Archie Scarbrough), the grandson she adored (Wills), and her sisters-in-law (Patsy Livingston, Ruth Livingston, and Imogene Joyner).
Hazel loved going to church and being with her brothers and sisters in Christ. A member of Harmony Primitive Baptist in Philadelphia, Hazel also attended Damascus Primitive Baptist in Sebastopol, Macedonia in Decatur, and Gumlog in Bailey.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 26 at 2:00 at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Suquelena. Elder Hilton Moore will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Dewayne Joyner, James LaDalton Edwards, Tullus Lee Johnson, Brian May, Theron Kenneth Livingston, Jeff Livingston, William Banks Scarbrough, and Archie Scarbrough.
Archie and Kathy would like to thank the Lord for sending angels to help take care of Mims: her precious sitters (Ms. Rue Herrington, Ms. Sherry Wolfe, Ms. Trisha Myers, Ms. Georgialene Mabry, Ms. Trajetta Gibson, and Ms. Jan Butler) and the kind, devoted staff at Southern Care Hospice, especially her long-time nurses (Brandi Addy and Shannon White).
